Windows Server 2012 - Add Wireless LAN Feature and Start Wireless Auto Config


By default, Windows Server 2012 doesn't allow Wireless LAN (or WiFi) connection.

To allow this, you need to do two things;
1) Add the Wireless LAN Feature to your server (refer the screenshot above),
and optionally,
2) Start Wireless Auto Config Services (refer the screenshot below).

STEPS

1) Find the Server Manager icon located at the far left of the Task Bar.
Click the icon.
Alternatively,
2) Move your mouse to bottom left corner of the screen until you see an icon pops up (Start button).
Click the icon.
When the Start page appears on the screen, click the Server Manager icon.
3) Server Manager.
By default, Dashboard is displayed.
4) Click the Local Server item.
The Local Server properties is displayed.
5) Click All Servers item.
Only one server (this server) is displayed implying that there is no other servers detected.
6) Click File and Storage Services.
Then, click Disks.
7) You can always navigate to the previous screen by clicking the Back Button.
From Step 6, if you click Back Button for 5 times, you will eventually go back to Step 3.
8) Quick Start.
The Quick Start steps consists of:
8.1) Configure the local server.
8.2) Add server roles and features.
8.3) Add other servers to manage.
8.4) Create a server group.
9) Even though Step 8 looks easy, you have to understand few concepts in order to be able to manage your server properly. Amongst all, these include:
9.1) Domain Name System
9.2) Active Directory
9.3) TCP/IP

PRE-REQUISITES

STEPS

1) In Command Window, Run Windows PowerShell
1.1) In the Command Window, type “powershell” and press Enter.
2) Add Windows Feature
2.1) Type “Add-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell” and press Enter.
2.2) Wait for the process to finish.
2.3) Type “shutdown /s”. (If you want to reboot, Type “shutdown /r”)
3) After the server restarted and you logged into the system, you will notice the GUI elements.

Windows 2012 with GUI feature. (Follow this tutorial, to create a Virtual Windows 2012 for experimentation, http://setup-steps.blogspot.com/2014/02/install-windows-server-2012-on.html )

STEPS

1) In the Server Manager window…
1.1) Click Manage…
1.2) Click Remove Roles and Features.

2) In the Remove and Features Wizard…
2.1) Click Server Selection Item.
2.2) Select the Server Name.
Click Next.
3) In the Remove Roles and Features Wizard window…
3.1) Select Features item.
3.2) Uncheck the User Interfaces and Infrastructure item.
3.3) When the Remove Roles and Features Wizard popup window appears, click Remove Features.
Click Next.
4) In the confirmation window…
4.1) Select auto restart.
Click Remove.
5) Wait for the process to complete.
6) After the server restarted and you logged into the system, you will notice that there is only a command window.

How To Install Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine On VirtualBox

PRE-REQUISITES:

You need to setup a Virtual Machine first. (Follow this tutorial http://setup-steps.blogspot.com/2014/02/windows-server-2012-virtual-machine-on.html ).

STEPS

1) Configure the CD Controller for your Virtual Machine to boot from a CD or an image file.
1.1) Select the Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine.
1.2) Click the Storage Settings item. Take note that at the moment, the item shows empty [CD/DVD].
1.3) Click the CD Controller
1.4) Click the CD icon, to find the path to CD or iso image.
1.5) Once you are done, you will see the right CD/iso path.
2) Start your Virtual Machine.
2.1) Select the Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine.
2.2) Click the Start button.
3) Windows Server 2012 boots from the CD/iso.
Click Next.
4) Click Install Now.
5) Select “Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (Server with a GUI)”.
Note: You can switch to non-Gui (Server Core) later.
Click Next.
6) License Terms.
6.1) Tick the checkbox.
Click Next.
7) Installation Type:
7.1) Click the “Custom” option.
8) Installation Target.
8.1) Select the target drive.
Click Next.
9) Wait for the process to complete.
The computer will restart when it is finished.
10) The computer restarts…
11) You will be required to enter the Administrator password. e.g “P@ssw0rd”.
Click Finish.
12) Finalizing your settings…
13) You will get Start Up screen.
14) You need to enter the password to login.
15) To shut down your server…
15.1) Move your mouse to bottom right corner of the screen.
15.2) When the control menu slides from right margin, move your mouse to the Settings icon. Click the icon.
15.3) Click on the Power icon.
15.4) Select Shut down.
15.5) Select reason to shut down.
Click Continue.

How To Create Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine On VirtualBox

PRE-REQUISITES:

1) VirtualBox software (This tutorial uses V.4.2.2)
2) Win 2012 installer (iso image or CD)

STEPS

1) In the VirtualBox Manager window, find the New Button. Click the button.
2) In the Create Virtual Machine dialog window, enter the following details:
2.1) Name: Wins2012-60gb
2.2) Type: Microsoft Windows
2.3) Version 2012 (64 bit)
Click Next.
3) In Memory Size dialog window, enter the following details:
3.1) 2048MB
4) In the Create Virtual Machine dialog window, choose the option:
4.1) Create a virtual hard drive now (select).
Click Create.
5) In the Create Virtual Hard Drive window, select:
5.1) VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) (select)
Click Next.
6) In the Create Virtual Hard Drive, select:
6.1) Dynamically allocated.
Click Next.
7) In the Create Virtual Hard Drive dialog window, set:
7.1) Name (you may leave the name unchanged).
7.2) Size (Make sure it is 60.00GB)
Click Create.
8) Virtual Creation is done.
